I’m always looking for fun things to do with my family. But it seems like everything costs a lot of money. I’ve been looking and came up with a list of three fun activities that don’t cost a fortune. Here’s what I came up with:
- Take a walk and enjoy nature.
- Read a book from the library.
- Visit the pet store and enjoy the animals.
Other than a little bit of time and gas to get to a couple of places, these activities are free. After reading about these three fun activities, think of some other things you can do for fun without spending a lot of money.
1 – Take a Walk and Enjoy Nature
Every spring when we’re coming out of winter I take a walk in the woods close to my house. And every year I wonder why I don’t walk in nature more often. Every time I take a walk and enjoy nature I think I need to do it again soon.
But life seems to get in the way and I forget how fun nature can be until I find time to take another walk. Instead of being like me and taking a walk when you have time, consider scheduling time for a nature walk.
In fact, I’m taking my advice and putting a nature walk on my calendar right now. I urge you to do the same thing. And if you have a family, get them involved.
Taking a walk in nature can be good for your body, mind, and soul. And best of all, it’s free.
2 – Read a Book from the Library
How long has it been since you visited a library? My daughter goes all of the time like I did when I was growing up. But I rarely visit the library now. Add visiting the library to the list of things I need to schedule time for.
You can read a book from the library for free. And you can find books covering just about any category you can think of. Libraries are filled with books teaching you how to do things, teaching you about history, and catching up on the latest fiction releases.
If you don’t have a library card, ask the librarian at the desk how to sign up. Most libraries still offer free membership cards. And with a membership card, you can check out books you want to read for free. And when you bring the books back, you can check out more books to read and enjoy.
Most libraries offer a lot more than books too. My local library offers free classes, computers you can use, movies, and yearly book sales. Ask your librarian for a schedule of activities and events the next time you stop in.
The US government even has a site where you can find libraries close to where you live.
3 – Visit the Pet Store and Enjoy the Animals
I don’t recommend doing this too often. But if you have a soft spot for animals as I do, you can visit the pet store and enjoy the animals. Of course, it’s dangerous for me to take my wife because she always wants to buy a new dog when we visit.
Pets can be a hassle sometimes, but overall pets give us companionship, loyalty, and a great deal of enjoyment. Even if you can’t have a pet right now, visiting the pets at the store can help calm you and give you a lot of enjoyment.
But if you get too attached to a pet at the pet store and end up buying it, be prepared to spend quite a bit of money. You can usually find pets for less money elsewhere.
Conclusion
Sometimes it seems like you can’t find anything to do for fun without spending a lot of money. But with a little imagination, you can find a lot of free or inexpensive things to do.
It doesn’t cost anything to take a walk and enjoy nature. And walking has the added benefit of being good for your health.
Libraries are full of books you can read for enjoyment. And library books are free. While it seems like most people have forgotten about libraries, they’re still the great free resources they’ve been for decades.
Finally, you can stop in a pet store every once in a while to see the animals. Just be careful that you don’t fall in love with an animal or the trip won’t be free.
